Macronix 75nm NOR flash chips verified by Samsung
Taiwan-based Macronix International reportedly has received verification for its 75nm 16Mb 1.8V NOR flash chips from Samsung Electronics, with shipments to ramp up starting 2014.
Samsung has been a major NOR flash customer of Winbond Electronics. Macronix' entry into the supply chain of the Korean vendor has intensified the competition between the two Taiwan-based NOR flash suppliers, according to market observers.
The observers also noted that Winbond with its flash products is looking to tap the high-density market segment. Macronix has already secured verification for its 75nm 64Mb 3V NOR flash chips from Nokia, the observers said. As for NAND flash, the company will start shipping engineering samples of its 36nm 4Gb chips to potential customers later in the fourth quarter of 2013, the observers indicated.
Sales of Macronix' flash products registered growth of 10% sequentially but a 5% on-year decrease in the third quarter of 2013, with unit shipments rising 6% on quarter and 11% from a year ago, the company has revealed. The segment accounted for 54% of Macronix' total revenues in the quarter.
Also a supplier of mask ROM chips, Macronix saw sales and unit shipments of the product line decline 12% and 24%, respectively, on year in the third quarter of 2013, the company disclosed. On a sequential basis, however, the segment posted growth of 98% in revenues and 51% in unit shipments.
Macronix reported NT$6.71 billion (US$228.2 million) in consolidated revenues for the third quarter of 2013, up 28% on quarter but down 9% on year. Gross margin climbed to 18% in the third quarter from 4% in the second, but operating margin remained negative during the third quarter.
Macronix stayed in the red with net losses of NT$908 million in the third quarter of 2013.
Macronix expects its fourth-quarter performance to remain flat compared to the previous quarter.
